REST based services\nYou send an HTTP request and you get a parseable result with the information. I just tested NetGeo of these kinds. It is not maintained for several years thus giving pretty bad results (putting my Budapest location to Amsterdam).\n3. REST based javascript APIs\nI didn\u0026rsquo;t really know how to name these. The principle is that you include a remote javascript file, and based on the requestor\u0026rsquo;s IP the returned javascript code will contain a few function calls with the results already built in. For example in my case it will contain lets say a function my_city() {return \u0026lsquo;Budapest\u0026rsquo;;}. Extremely simple to use, maxmind and geoplugin offers such services.\n4. The W3C API\nIt is expected that in the future all modern browsers (not counting IE ;) ) will conform to the emerging W3C standard. How will they do it? Its their problem, you just simply call a javascript function and have your Lat/Long info ready. At the moment the upcoming Firefox 3.1 seems to support this natively(!), while older Firefoxes can have the Geode plugin to produce similar results. I only tested Geode, but as it exclusively relies on WiFi positioning, without any fallback method, either it gives you some results (i never saw one), or it just flatly fails.\n5. Other browser extensions\nGears have the ability to tell your location, so if you expect your visitors to have the Gears extension, you might as well rely on this. Simple and gave me a good result.\n6. Combined methods\nAn interesting approach can be found here. It first tries to use the native API, secondly one of the extensions (including Gears), lastly it falls back to Google loader ClientLocation. Although the code is not very elegant and it has to include a lot of external files upfront, it is an approach that can gain some ground pretty soon.\n7. Fire eagle \\[UPDATE\\]\nYahoo created fire eagle with the purpose to control what applications can access what level of location information (You have the same control with #4). Both the user and the consuming application has to be registered at the fire eagle website. The user is \u0026ldquo;responsible\u0026rdquo; to keep his location up to date either manually or with the use of an external application, and whenever an application tries to access this information, the user has to allow it through the fire eagle website. Under the hood FE tries to locate you automatically with method #4. I had one pain using FE: you cannot drag and drop the pinpoint of your location freely, and since it was not very confident with my address (Yahoo maps apparently has a typo in my street name), i couldnt set my exact location.\nUPDATE2: There is an article on how to build an app to use FireEagle, you might find it useful.\nAny other methods? Works great!\nsimplify path data\nOk, this one you will not be able to do in your text editor. The idea is to reduce the number of coordinates required to describe a path. Even if it means you will have a less precise path, the result might be satisfying. To do this, you have to have Inkscape. Select an area, and you will see in the status bar the number of nodes it consists of. Now select path/simplify from the menu. If you are lucky, your number of nodes will be less, if you are not, it will actually be higher:) For me it worked best, when i set the simplification threshold (Edit/Preferences - Misc) from 0.0020 to 0.01. Yes, you will have visible deviation from the original path, but in my case it was acceptable. Also note, that under a certain number of nodes (for me it was around 80) it is not worth to run the simplification.\nreduce coordinate precision\nOk, so i still had (and you will most likely have) a precision of four decimals in my path coordinates. What if i reduce it to 3/2/1/God forbid zero ?! Yep, no visible impact on the web, but huge saving on the filesize! Putting aside licensing questions, i strongly believe that closing down the access to older versions is rarely a good idea. Apparently it couldnt digest my file. Next one!\nJSDoc\nNot to be mistaken with the JSD above! Because this is good:) It is PERL based, and will be happily running after you have downloaded the HTML-Template package. It magically recognized all my kinky objects and methods, and generated a classical jsdoc for them. Well done, i will stick with this one.\nJSDoc Toolkit \\[UPDATE\\]\nJust to confuse you more, there is this \u0026ldquo;toolkit\u0026rdquo; version. It seems to be the younger brother of the above mentioned JSDoc, but it is completely javascript based. Getting rid of the PERL dependency is great but it comes at a price. The javascript based processing is terribly slow, you have to see it for yourself if it is worth to switch. (Ok, ok, some of you might use log instead.)\nTo my greatest surprise the part where the application showed significant slowdown in some cases, was a simple echo statement. Well, i wont be able to optimize that, will i? Why can this be happening?\nAfter a bit of googling, i came across this site, where they suggest to split up the echo to smaller chunks to avoid network fragmentation. Hmm, i gave it a try, but no difference. It is a rather old post so i was scrolling down on the comments (most of them are engaging into the question of determining MTU and completely miss the point) to see if people still face this problem, and what are their solutions. The very last post (at that time) suggested simply using output buffering.\nWell, my application was already using ob, but as i inspected the code more closely, one of the modules that was included early in the page generation, simply switched ob off!\nDamm, switching it back speeded up the application again!\nSo what is happening in the background?\nI am not sure about the implementation of echo, but i guess when echoing a large string over a slow network, if output buffering is not used, echo waits until it has sent the last byte.
